The NYT reports on the latest activities of the American justice system:
A German citizen who said he was kidnapped by the Central Intelligence Agency and tortured in a prison in Afghanistan lost his last chance to seek redress in court today when the Supreme Court declined to consider his case. The justicesâ€™ refusal to take the case of Khaled el-Masri let stand a March 2 ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, in Richmond, Va. That court upheld a 2006 decision by a federal district judge, who dismissed Mr. Masriâ€™s lawsuit on the grounds that trying the case could expose state secrets.
The ordeal of Mr. Masri, who is of Lebanese descent and was apparently the victim of mistaken identity, was the most extensively documented case of the C.I.A.â€™s controversial practice of â€œextraordinary rendition,â€ in which terrorism suspects are abducted and sent for interrogation to other countries, including some in which torture is practiced…
Oh, by the way, here are some of America’s complaints against Britan in the Declaration of Independence. It’s a pretty interesting read in general. I find the last three paragraphs to be particularly compelling, myself.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
