So my attendence at both previously-posted events last night and this morning were cancelled on account of sick. It’s just a cold, but it’s the kind you have to watch out for because it really wants to turn into something gnarly. Since the semester’s just about to begin, I thought it wise to try to be healthy when that happens.
Bummed, but self-care always comes first. Today will be much sitting still and drinking tea, maybe watch a movie or something. I’ve been working my butt off the last couple of months–I’m not nearly as bored and relaxed as I should be at the end of a semester. Finally saw Ushpizin last night, though–great movie.
So, anybody make it out to the thing last night? How was it?
Feel better! Sorry — refuah shelemah!
I was at the “atzeret” last night. I was very impressed that it was pulled off by a bunch of kids who had been inspired by watching “mekudeshet”.
Lots of big names speakers, ranging from amazing to somewhat less so, but too many– it went on too long. A couple politicians started shamelessly camaigning from the podium, and got yelled at by the audience.
Highlights– Sari Diskin (haredit; former aguna); Rachel Azaria (?) head of mavoi satum spoke incredibly well about how the courts CAN be shut down and replaced if enough pressure b/c that happened w/ conversion courts .
Other potential solutions included changing division of property laws so couldn’t be tied to a “get”; withholding gov’t stipends to recalcitrant husbands, gov’t assistance to agunot so wouldn’t be so vulnerable to blackmail, use of annulment, actually using current laws punishing husbands, etc.
When it had pretty much degenerated into a youth group re-union/concert, I left.
