Back to Hol

Tefillin, regular liturgy, and something vaguely reflecting a routine.

The holidays have been great–really, it’s been a fantastic ’round this year, and I’m sorry to see them go. Simchat Torah was wonderful, lots of dancing and great tefillah and everything. My leg muscles are killing me, in a good way, because I got so much of the Ashkenazi Boogie on.

But every hag has its end, and over here in Eretz Yisrael, hag is over. Tomorrow: back to the grindstone, and real traction to be made on this chapter. Onward!

(Super rad Barbie by Jen. Note the teeny tiny Steinsaltz from which she’s learning!!)

  1. I like the fact she’s wearing them above the hairline. Who knew Barbie was so makpidah?

And, for those who haven’t seen it yet, here’s the URL of the Rosie the Riveter with Tefillin, to which Danya linked a while ago: http://sospire.blogspot.com/20.....lefty.html

  2. Cf. this painful photo of several rabbinical students wearing their tefillin too low:

    http://www.neuewelt.at/archiv/.....poras3.jpg

It was taken by Frédéric Brenner, and appears in his books “Diaspora” and “Jews/America: A Representation.”

To judge the women favorably, I assume they had just finished davening and forgot to check if their tefillin were still properly aligned before being photographed.

  3. […] Even Barbie seemed to enjoy the Simchat Torah holiday this year (photo courtesy of Danya, who had a pretty good holiday, too.) […]

  4. Here’s my bet on the tefillin - they look like they might be a little loose, and the photographer almost certainly spent fifteen or more minutes saying: “Ok, you goover to the end, pick your head up a litle, no, no, you, stand up so that your left shoulder ishigher… ok, that’s it… ”
In the meantime the tefillin are drooping every which way, - at least two or three of the women are holding their heads in a way that suggests to me they’re hoping the tefillin don’t fall down over their eyes….

  7. Showed it to my 8 year old daughter. She would like to know where can you buy her. She says: It’s really nice to see a Jewish Barbie. (As I put on tefilin it looks preety mainstream to her)

  8. […] Dang, that picture of Barbie is absolutely making the rounds. It’s on BoingBoing today, and the DovBear post has almost 200 comments (many of them quite tiresome for me to read, debating whether or not women can lay tefillin or not and the like), it’s going to be printed in a couple of magazines, and has brought Jen a few solid business hits and a couple of more good inquiries, and was even the talk of Women of the Wall this morning. […]
